Below are fitment instructions to fit a 4x4Direct Snorkel to a FJ62 Land Cruiser

These instructions were supplied with the compliments of Dave Moore (Thanx Dave)

So I bought another FJ62 and decided to fit one of these Safari replica or to put it bluntly - Cheap Chinese Snorkels. I searched the forum and came up with THIS thread on how to fit it. I decide to create my own thread as mine is a different vehicle.

It turned out to be pretty basic. I made a mistake by buying an inferior hole saw as I didn`t have an 89mm one in my garge. This wasted time as I had to go out and get another one. If you don`t have a hole saw, only go for BluMol or Bosch. I am not sure what else is available, but make sure it can cut STEEL - NOT WOOD !

Another thing which is not all that commonly known is you never cut a smaller hole first with a hole saw. You only cut the size you need right from the start.

A nice fresh RH fender about to be butchered !

Start by removing the windscreen fluid bottle. You won`t be able to work in there if you don`t.

Once that is out you can get in there quite easily.

I put a strip of tape underneath first and then just marked up where the holes are going to be. The small hole on the right is where the 89mm hole will go. The other three I drilled with a 5mm drill first and then 9mm. You need to be fairly accurate, but all the holes you drill need to have clearance so don`t panic if you are not Mr Accuracy. It`s not a nuclear clock we are making here.

I just double checked that the hole at least looked like they were in the correct place before drilling. Drill on slow speed when using the hole saw. The peripheral speed at a diameter of 89mm is very high so you will burn the saw out if you go in fast.

First fitment. The holes were all spot on. I noticed that the one closest to the door ran into a support or something just inside the fender. I decided that there were enough studs holding it on so didn`t worry about it. If you need to put that stud in, you will have to remove the fender.

To remove the old intake boot, you have to remove this bolt. It`s the 6mm one just behind the battery. Don`t go digging around inside the fender because there isn`t anything holding it on inside there!

I taped up the circumference of where the snorkel will make contact with the fender. The fit isn`t perfect but it`s pretty good. I taped around the studs to try and reduce the chance of water ingress around the drilled holes. I did also clean up the holes thoroughly with a round file and painted with Hammerite paint as well. The studs were locktited in. Its no use having a nylock nut on the inside when the whole thing can unscrew itself. Putting the nuts on is pretty simple if you have a small socket set. Don`t drop the nuts or washers on the inside!

The bracket which goes on the pillar comes with a few pop rivets. I do not have a rivnut tool so decided to rather use some wide flange pop rivets with a liberal spread of clear marine sealer. I also made sure I got the sealant down the hole of the pop rivet to stop water running in there. It went on very easily and feels pretty secure to me.

The flexible hose must be put on correctly or there is no use having the snorkel. I did battle to get it right over the snorkel tube before I could put the clamp on. Use a small mirror to make sure that it is as far on as possible. When tightening the clamp make sure it does not move over the edge of the tubing whilst tightening.

I have not connected up to the filter housing yet because the tube on that end is too big by about 10 mm. I will see if I can get a short piece of hose to size it up a bit tomorrow and will edit this post accordingly. Don`t be tempted to just tighten it up thinking it will seal because it probably won`t.

I hope others find this useful.
